同一数字的两种惯例
用手指数「3」看似简单——直到在国外酒吧出现第一次误解。在欧洲大陆（德国、法国、奥地利、瑞士、意大利、西班牙），标准惯例从拇指开始：「1」=仅拇指，「2」=拇指+食指，「3」=拇指+食指+中指。在英语国家（美国、英国、爱尔兰、澳大利亚），典型顺序从食指开始：「1」=仅食指，「2」=食指+中指，「3」=食指+中指+无名指。
Morris、Collett、Marsh和O'Shaughnessy（1979年）在25个欧洲国家系统地记录了这一差异。昆汀·塔伦蒂诺的电影《无耻混蛋》（2009年）使这个误解广为人知：英国特工阿奇·希科克斯用食指、中指和无名指点了「三杯」，从而暴露了自己并非真正的德国人。在任何国际背景下，都应在手势之外用语言表达数字。
最后，除了手指的顺序，各文化在手势方向上也不同：西方从握拳开始伸展手指，而俄罗斯和东欧则相反，把张开的手的手指向拳头方向收拢（日本也是收拢手指，参见e0044）。这种差异甚至可用来辨别国籍，尤其在战时（维基百科「Finger-counting」）。起始手指也因国家而异（从小指开始的伊朗见e0517）。
